1. Romany caravan, Cardigan bay, Ceredigion
The owners have renovated a traditional Gypsy caravan and bought a Scandinavian style holiday cabin, which they restored with a 1970’s interior. Inland from Cardigan Bay, it is tucked away in a wildflower meadow beside a river where brown trout and otter are protected as part of a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
The site is run as a low impact, eco-friendly concern – the combination of quirky accommodation and a picturesque location sets this apart from other holidays.

2. Trericket Mill Vegetarian Guesthouse, Builth Wells, Powys
On an SSSI, Skithwen brook is part guesthouse, part bunk house, part campsite and all grade II listed. The original watermill machinery is still place and the guests’ dining room has been created amongst the jumble of grain bins, gear wheels and shutes.
All the food on offer is fairly traded, wholefood and free-range. It is a great base for exploring the Brecon Beacons, Black Mountains or Radnor Hills on foot, horseback or bicycle.

3. Bryn Elltyd Guest House, Ffestiniog, Gwynedd
Set in the heart of the Snowdonia National Park, solar collectors heat the water at this lakeside B&B. The wood burner is also fuelled by wood from the grounds.

5. TYF Ecohotel, St. Davids, Pembrokeshire
Located near St David’s in the Pembrokeshire coast national, park the TYF Ecohostel has a positive approach to helping the environment. Its menu features organic and local and seasonal produce, as well as organic beers, ciders and wines.
The windmill building is 200 years old and the original tower still stands.
